Sunscreen causes cancer? Are you serious? Cancer debates are starting to remind me of global warming debates. There doesn’t seem to be enough evidence on either side so people just try to quote any case study they can to backup whatever they want to believe.
I found this cnn video courtesy of Jennifer Lance over at http://ecochildsplay.com/2010/06/30/cnn-ewg-do-sunscreens-cause-cancer/
From oxybenzone to Vitamin A, there are many concerning ingredients in sunscreens that have resulted in cancerous tumors in rats. Even though we use more sunscreen than ever, the effectiveness is questionable when examining statistics:
This quote was taken from Jennifer’s blog post and I only have one real comment on it. This is a test on rats, not humans or apes. I know there have been a lot of studies on rats that have led to correlations to human anatomy but this seems far from a conclusive argument. I’ve always been on the fence when it comes to these debates. I just try and use protection only for long exposures to the sun. I think this quote on Jennifer Lance’s blog sums it up for me:
“The best sunscreen is a hat and a shirt. No chemicals to absorb through the skin, no questions about whether they work.”
Since there is much debate over the negative or positive effects of sun exposure, doesn’t this stance seem to be the best course of action we have at the moment? Limit your exposure, but not completely. 15 mins to an hour a day of unprotected sun exposure certainly can’t hurt you, and some would say it helps your vitamin D levels. And this eliminates the need for sunscreens, thus eliminating any worry of sunscreen induced cancers. Seems like a safe plan to me, who’s with me?
